299. secret waterfalls, minano

I went up to Chichibu on Friday to spend the weekend with Yuri. It was quite a long train ride (approximately 3 hours) but I didn't mind at all because it was nice looking out of the window, from the city slowly getting closer to the countryside. Slowly, there were more rice fields, lakes and mountains in sight as I got closer to my destination.

She picked me up from the station and we went to get dinner. It was my first time being in the front seat of a car in Japan. I have been on vans, buses and trains of course, but not a car so I was really happy. The sunset was also really nice from where she lives. I must have sounded really silly when I would comment on how pretty the mountains are because she sees them every day. We were just talking away like how we always do once we met up.

We went to a sushi restaurant and went straight to her place after dinner.

We just talked till really late (we always talk too much, but now even more so because we don't see each other like we used to) and I only fell asleep at 5am.

The next day, we left her house at 2 in the afternoon and she drove to the mountains where there are waterfalls. The scenery was really pretty with plenty of green. I love the mountains the most. It felt like I was in a movie.

She brought me to a waterfall and told me that the water is actually really clear but because it rained the day before, the water was a little murky from the mud.

We decided to explore the area more, so we went into the woods following a trail to another smaller waterfall. It definitely felt like I was in a fairytale-like scene because of all the little streams and how tall the trees actually are. The sound of the running water in the streams was really relaxing.

The smaller waterfall was not that impressive but it was still fun hiking through the woods. We were getting hungry, so we decided to get udon at a little restaurant nearby. On the way back, we spotted a snake in the middle of the road and got scared, so we decided to find another way back. I love snakes but not in the wild where there's a high possibility that they can kill me.

said snake.
We also have no idea what this is.

The udon restaurant was really cute, owned by an old married couple. We got cold udon for only 500yen. It was my first time having cold udon and it was so good! After lunch, we had soft serve. I chose the white coffee flavour, which is really yummy and most popular flavour, and Yuri got the black soybean flour soy milk which had a questionable taste. It was not bad but it just tasted weird and had a strange grainy texture. You can also literally taste the flour in the soft cream which made it weirder. Yuri wasn't pleased with it at all, haha.

They had interesting flavours like salt milk, gold sesame milk and Hokkaido corn potage soup as well. I told Yuri that I'm gonna try salt milk the next time I visit her.

We didn't know where to go next, so we decided to just drive to Chichibu and see if there's anything on the way. We dropped by Tsutaya to check out some DVDs and  CDs first and honestly, Tsutayas at the countryside are so different from the ones I normally go to because they have a much smaller selection of music and movies. It was kind of strange to me. After Yuri got some DVDs, we were on the road again and we spotted a small temple sign and we decided to check it out.

I'm glad we did because it's one of the nicest temples, though small, I've been to in Japan. Asakusa is over-hyped honestly.

This temple's intricate details was what I really loved about it. Also because the sun was setting, it looked really pretty in the sunlight. The quiet made it felt really peaceful.

There was also a cemetary next to it. Japan's cemetaries are really nothing like anywhere else in the world because they don't feel creepy at all.

She drove us back to her place and we chilled there for a bit before going to the supermarket and getting dinner. After dinner, she drove us to the top of Minoyama Park. I was really freaked out by how dark it was at first but once we got there, there were several people around so it made me less worried. You had to have a torch light to go around, I just use the torchlight on my phone, haha.

The view of the city from the top of the mountain was really pretty. I've never liked observatories and stuff like that... maybe because I feel like it's "fake". But I really liked the view from Minoyama and the sky was so clear that night, I could see so many stars in the night sky. Definitely had a hard time looking back and forth the cityscape and night sky.

We spent over an hour there just talking and admiring the lights of the city before deciding to head back. The park wasn't far away from her place so we got back in no time. Again, we stayed up to talk but we went to bed earlier, at 3am. I knocked out immediately after my shower, we did so much in a day, it was definitely a day well spent.

298. wandering into towns

Yesterday, I wanted to make full use of the cloudy weather and decided to visit the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum in Koganei. It wasn't difficult to get to since it was kind of near by, only 4 stops away from Tachikawa, and then take a bus from Musashi Koganei station to Koganei park and walk for about 5 minutes.

I found this museum while watching The Making of Spirited Away Documentary and have always wanted to go, yesterday I just felt like wandering around on my own, so I figured it was the right time to go. Some of the buildings here are the inspiration for the town that Chihiro walks into in the beginning of Spirited Away.

The entrance fee is only 400yen, and 320yen for students. The Museum is divided into two sections called the West Zone and East Zone. The east zone is where all "Spirited Away lookalike" buildings are at. Naturally, I went to that part of the museum first.

The first house I went into is a kitchenware store, I like how everything is arranged, especially the hanging pots. There is also a flower shop next to this building but there is an alleyway that leads you to the back of this building.

297. little wonders

by Yoskay Yamamoto, Japanese artist based in California.
by 有空5mins, Taiwanese artist I found while I was traveling around Taipei.
by Ros Lee, aka Polkaros. Singaporean artist based in Tokyo.
by Kumakichi, based in Tokyo, an artist I found while wandering around Kichijoji one afternoon.

Lately, I have been looking more into sculpture and minimal looking work. I love drawing and painting details but every once in a while it's nice to just create something different. I have been wanting to keep my hands moving since my school semester started.

I came across a quote on Instagram one fine afternoon and it really hit me.

The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul.

296. my name is evil iii, lynch.

On Sunday was lynch.'s Dark. Darker. Darkness 2 -My Name Is Evil - tour final. I slowly made my way down to Studio Coast and was pretty excited for this show because of a ton of things but mostly happy I get to see my favorite band again.

I wasn't too crazy this time around with squeezing my way to the front, so I stood somewhere in the middle with a pretty good view of the stage. There were way more guys at this show. It always amuses me when guys scream for Hazuki. I still get that hair-raising feeling every time the lights go out, it's always only for them. To my surprise, they opened to MOON.

This show was pretty alright, I enjoyed myself while headbanging to some of my favorite songs. I was really glad they decided to play ENVY! I haven't seen them play that in a long time,  maybe 2 years? Also, melt. The setlist today was good except I still wish they would play an illusion. I wasn't that annoyed with MIRRORS or THE FATAL HOUR HAS COME. I'm glad they decided to change the sequence of their songs because it has become rather predictable. Only songs I didn't like for the day were JUDGEMENT and LIGHTNING.

The most fun were GREED, INVINCIBLE, GHOST, GALLOWS, INVADER, ALL THIS I'LL GIVE YOU, pulse_ (duh), EVILLY and TIAMAT.

Their mc was really long again but I enjoyed it this time because I could understand most of it. Hazuki and Reo were making fun of AK which I thought was pretty funny. I left to get my drink while LIGHTNING was playing. They closed to TIAMAT and amazingly, there was a mosh pit infront of me. Hazuki was happy seeing the mosh pit as well. I really wish their fans are more ~brutal~ so it would be more fun, but oh well.

Encore songs were picked by AK. They also announced a new album scheduled to release sometime in Autumn, a new tour, and some other events. I don't know why but I'm not that excited for their new album, maybe just not yet because it's still a long time from now. The only problem with releasing a new album is that the more albums they have, the lesser chance I will get to see them play old songs. Which, their old songs mean more to me obviously.

Maybe that's why I'm starting to lose interest because I mostly go for the old songs nowadays.

They have some shows in July with SUG and vistlip but I'm not going to any because I don't like any of them. Hazuki was mostly talking about 闇 , and how lynch. fans will look cooler than SUG and vistlip fans, lol. That actually made me laugh.

It's been 3 years since I first saw them and after maybe 20? of their shows, I won't lie and say that I still feel the same way I did all those years ago. I still love them but things are very different now.

I probably won't see them till they release their  new album, so... till then.

295. local treasures, singapore

On Monday, little sis and I went out for lunch and also, I needed to get some art materials before I return to Japan. We had lunch at Paragon and took a bus down to Plaza Singapura. I got my art supplies and we just roamed around Dhoby Ghaut. I somehow managed to find Over The Garden Wall and Adventure Time comics, it was pretty cheap, so I decided to get them.

Since The Little Drom Store was nearby, we decided to drop by there as well. I've been wanting to visit the store since I found their Instagram. Unfortunately, no photos are allowed in the store. I really love the amount of detail they put into the store, what draws me in the most is that they make Singaporean-inspired merchandise. They sell Polkaros and other artists' products there as well.

In the end, I got 6 earrings. A Pierrot themed 3 set by Polkaros, and three other Singaporean goodies by the store itself, I bought Ice-Kachang, Packet Teh and The Dragon. I also bought a small gift for H here because he told me he wanted something that reminded me of my childhood. I had such a hard time deciding what to buy because I wanted to buy too many things.

the lighting sucks.
I bought Fionna & Cake instead just because...

Walking around Dhoby Ghaut really made me feel nostalgic because it has been forever since I've been in that area. I used to walk to school every day from Dhoby Ghaut Station to Lasalle. There were a lot of flashbacks this time around while I roamed around Singapore with little sis.

We met up with mom and dad later on for dinner. We went to a Chinese restaurant that we have been going to since I was 10 years old. Even though I always say that I really hate Singapore because of all the bad memories I have there, I can't hate it entirely still. I did spend most of my life here afterall. I will never call it my home but visiting for a couple of days once in a while is nice.

----------------------------------------------------

On the day before I returned to Tokyo, little sis and I went to explore some new places. But first, we made our way to Tiong Bahru because I really wanted Plain Vanilla cupcakes. They're my favorite cupcakes in the world.

Little sis and I had lunch at Ah Chiang's porridge. I really miss Chinese porridge and especially this one because it's so nice and fluffy. Plus century egg? Yesssssss.

Tiong Bahru is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Singapore because of the cute shops, cafes, local food and old houses. It is one of the oldest residential estates in Singapore, I really love looking at all the old houses. I've never really appreciated things like this until little sis started working at a cafe here a couple of years ago.

We went to walk off the food by searching for Curated Records. Their collection of vinyl weren't impressive to me because they didn't have any of the bands I like. Mostly mainstream music. Only for a couple of exceptions like Dimmu Borgir, if you don't count Norwegian black metal mainstream.

After that, we did the usual and went to Books Actually, Woods in the Books and finally Plain Vanilla! To be perfectly honest, I like the back of Books Actually more than the books itself, haha.
